THE EXPERT VIGNERON AND THE “ENFANT PRODIGE” OF COLLI DI PARMA

During a fresh spring morning, with a shining sun on the luxuriant vineyards and on the four lakes of Monte delle Vigne, we meet Valentino and Edoardo, the main characters of this news made as it would be an interview to the two vinification “wizards”.

Valentino is a man with a gentle smile and his eyes shine of passion each time he talks about Monte delle Vigne wines. He is the expert vigneron : he works like vintner since 1996 and he his proud of his Moldavian origins (“We faced the 80% of the wine request from Russia”) and he knows how to let each grape variety stand out.
Together with Valentino there is Edoardo, a passionate guy with an innate talent and with an unlimited curiosity that bring him to explore new techniques and to enhance the science over vinification. Valentino sees in him an extraordinary potentiality and he guides him wisely through the path of the creation of exceptional wines.
Together, Valentino and Edoardo work in a perfect harmony by putting together experience and tradition with freshness innovation.

But, let’s start with some questions…
How did you begin this work?
V: “After 5 years of studying what we call “viticulture and vinification college”, I began to work into a big Moldavian winery and I came to Italy to experience on Italian wine at the beginning, then I decided to stay.”
E: “I think I’m a predestined person because I have always had a real passion for wine and, in Piacenza, I took the classes of a specialization course to become “eno-technique” at the Istituto Superiore Rainieri”.

Which is the best part of your work?
V: “Mainly the awareness of creating something special, an excellence that can be knowable from everyone”
E: “I agree with him and I also add that working with a raw material that comes from our land makes it more and more satisfying”.

And the most difficult part?
V: “For me it’s not a phase of the productive process but it’s the idea of scarifying summer to work, because with the climate change we are obliged to work the grapes since the 15th of August… also earlier last year.”
E: “I have no doubt: bottling is the most strenuous phase!”

Which is the vinification process that you cannot avoid mentioning?
V: “I’m proud I get better the modality through which Monte delle Vigne produces its rosé: Rubina is today, with the maceration of Barbera on the peels for few hours, a wine that… arrives to the heart!”
E: “The aging of Callas inside amphoras, with its complexity and three people for the “svinatura” moment is something extremely exciting.”

A more technique question: how do you use freshness during vinification?
V: “It’s important to balance the use of it to reach the wine stability without overstep to avoid ruining a raw material – our hand-picked grape – of high quality.”

Why Monte delle Vigne has three types of Lambrusco with three different vinification methods?
E: “I Salici has a more evolved maturation which is the result of our work of previous vintages; the refermentation inside autoclave of “I Calanchi” has always the aim of creating a fine bubble, that can exalt the perfumes of Lambrusco Maestri and finally, Rio Valli has an intense bubble that guarantee an intense drunk, also thanks the presence of Grasparossa”

What were you doing today before we stopped you?
V:”I was making the preparation for the yeasts of I Calanchi 2023”
E: “I was filling a tank of Lambrusco”

Edoardo, which tricks did you “steal” from Valentino?
E: “the attention and care to all the details of vinification. I also add that on the Lambrusco, he is incomparable!”

Valentino, what would you recommend to a young vintner (as Edoardo)?
V: “He knows, now that he has become father, that wine is like a son that everyday change and that need to be followed, by staying near the tanks.”

So, on Colli di Parma, while the seasons change and prepare themselves to give their products, Valentino and Edoardo are ready to host them, inspired by the beauty of nature and by the passion of their work, to create extraordinary wines that have inside the flavour and the soul of this magic Emilian land.
